Because life has no borders!
Meet Jessica Kagan Cushman. A jewelry designer by trade Cushman has taken
the art of scrimshaw to a whole new level with her antique ivory bracelets. Having
learnt the art from her father, famed furniture designer Vladimir Kagan, Cushman
has transformed the technique to a somewhat unorthodox level creating one of a
kind pieces that are somewhere "between a tattoo and a bumper sticker." The
traditional practice of scrimshaw devised by whale hunters of yesteryears was
once used to depict whale hunting scenes, or girls featured in the magazines of
the times, has now become a modern tool for witty women everywhere to wear
their bling and make a statement. Cushman takes quotes from movies,
literature, and even NYC graffiti and transcribes them onto Wooly Mammoth
ivory. Yes, you read right, the ivory is not just antique it's ancient. Fossolized
ivory which is preserved in permafrost of Alaska and Siberia is anywhere from
10,000 to 40,000 years old. And, while that fact is cool in itself, Cushman's touch
makes them one of the freshest ideas of our century. Find them, get them, flaunt
them. Cushman’s pieces are available at Barney's NY, Beverly Hills, and
Boston. For a complete list of stores visit jessicacushman.com.
